Terminology

It is important to be sensitive when using language to describe groups of people. Wrong or inappropriate language can cause offence as it may reflect ways of thinking that are not acceptable.

INCORRECT TERMS
Deaf and Dumb
Mute
The Deaf

CORRECT TERMS
Deaf
Profoundly Deaf
Deafened
Hard of Hearing
Deaf People
Partially Deaf
Partially Hearing
Hearing Impaired

Most profoundly Deaf sign language users reject the idea of being called disabled. They class themselves as a linguistic minority group and because they do not have a physical disability they do not feel disabled. They are proud of their language, culture and history.
